Description
Methacrylate-based composites are tooth-colored materials that are widely used in restorative dentistry. These composites consist of an organic matrix and silanized inorganic fillers. Typically, the organic phase contains difunctional monomers as well as additives like photoinitiators and stabilizers. The interaction between the organic matrix and the filler particles is crucial for the consistency and is controlled by the filler surface functionalization. Usually, the filler particles are functionalized with methacrylate bearing silanes. These silanes not only improve the wettability of the surface, furthermore they allow to covalently incorporate the filler particles into the resin matrix during the radical polymerization. By modifying the structure of these silanes, the interaction between filler surface and organic matrix can be tailored to control the consistency. In this internship we envision to synthesize a wide range of silanes bearing various functional groups (aromatic, acidic, acetal moieties, etc.) and to functionalize filler particles with them. The resulting modified filler particles will be used to formulate dental composites which will be evaluated subsequently (mechanical properties, consistency, etc.).
