Description
A MSc project is available in the group of Prof. Dr. Alexandria (Ali) Deliz Liang in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Zurich (Switzerland). Our laboratory works on advanced methods in protein engineering including genetic code expansion. Currently, we are seeking a highly motivated MSc student to work on engineering new tools for genetic code expansion either for a thesis or semester project.
Your responsibilities
The primary goal of the MSc project will be to work directly with a current PhD student to engineer new aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (aaRS) and tRNA pairs for new genetic code expansion tools and to study a proof of concept for engineering a target protein. Within this framework, the MSc student will conduct cloning for new aaRS/tRNA pairs, directed evolution of the aaRS/tRNA pairs (incl. DNA library creation, selection/screening assays, and hit validation), protein purification, and protein characterization.
Your profile
· A highly motivated MSc student with experience in biochemistry or chemistry.
· The candidate should be enthusiastic about learning new techniques and working in an interdisciplinary laboratory.
· Excellent communication skills in English are essential.
· An understanding of transcription and translation is an advantage.
· Previous experience with bacterial cloning or protein expression is also an advantage.
What we offer
We offer an exciting opportunity to join a new team conducting dynamic, interdisciplinary, and challenging research. Students will be provided the opportunity to learn high-value techniques for future careers in academia or industry, including enzyme engineering and data analytics. The MSc student will be given the chance to regularly present their laboratory work within group meetings and receive feedback. Additionally, the laboratory is situated centrally in Zurich (Irchel), which offers a diverse and international environment.
